Can I switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro?
When deciding between Wegovy and Mounjaro for weight loss, there are various factors to consider that may prompt a change in your weight loss approach.
Weight-loss treatments have varying effects on individuals, and what works for one person may not necessarily work for another. If you are suffering from side effects and are not experiencing any weight loss even at the highest prescribed dose of semaglutide (Wegovy) , switching to Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) might be worth considering.
If you have experienced adverse effects from Wegovy, transitioning to Mounjaro could be an alternative. Although both medications share common side effects, their compositions differ in that Wegovy, manufactured by Novo Nordisk, is solely a GLP-1 receptor agonist; Mounjaro, produced by Eli Lilly, is both a GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist and the first of its kind in obesity and weight management.
It is crucial to remember that both drugs should be used alongside a low-calorie diet and regular exercise for optimal results.
Clinical trials suggest both medications are safe and effective for weight management, but they found that Mounjaro appears to be more effective than Wegovy when it comes to the total amount of weight lost.
Doses
Another factor when considering switching from Wegovy to Mounjaro are the doses. Wegovy has 5 different strengths, while Mounjaro has 6. They are both once-weekly injections, and you should follow the dosing schedule until you find the dose most suited to you.
With Mounjaro, you must start on the lowest dose at 2.5mg and it is important to remember that if a lower dose is effective, there will be no need to increase. If you have already been taking Wegovy and wants to swap to Mounjaro, depending on the dose of Wegovy you may be able to start Monujaro on a higher dose but this will be discussed following your approved consultation form.
Switching treatments
Do not stop or start any medication without speaking to us first, due to the different doses and scheduling, you will need to have stopped taking Wegovy before you start taking Mounjaro but advice will be given to you following your consultation.
Starting Mounjaro
Once you have decided to make the switch, you may need to start Mounjaro on the lowest dose before following the dosing schedule and increasing. It may feel like a set back starting from the beginning but it is important for us to manage your weight loss journey safely. If you increase the dose too quickly, it could lead to adverse side effects, so it is important that you follow the schedule until we find the dose suited to you.
